UDS Wa campus School of Business and Law wins the 2nd edition of Inter-tertiary Business Sense Challenge ( 2020).

The contest started with nineteen tertiary institutions in the second edition of the Inter-Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC). The contest took place  inside TV3 Executive Theatre at Kanda in Accra.

Nineteen participating schools registered for this year’s competition and they include, the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), All Nations University College, University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi Technical University (KTU) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC).


The rest are the University for Development Studies (UDS), Bluecrest University College, Wisconsin University College (WUC), Radford University (RU), Methodist University College (MUC), Accra Institute of Technology (AIT), Ghana Technology University College (GTUC), African University College of Communications (AUCC), Central University College (CUC), Accra Technical University (ATU) and the University of Education, Winneba (UEW).

SEMI-FINAL STAGE

Four public tertiary institutions progressed to the semi-final stage of the second edition of the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge (TBSC).

The University for Development Studies (UDS) was nearly out of the contest when they met University of Cape Coast (UCC), but had the opportunity to come back into the contest after becoming the losing school with the highest score.

While the University of Cape Coast (UCC) is poised to defend its title it won in the maiden edition last year, the University for Development Studies (UDS) is also determined to unseat the Cape Coast lads to claim the bragging rights and UDS was able to claim the title from UCC.

Right from the start of the contest, the defending champions exhibited their dominance, proving that they were ready to maintain and defend their title.

Finally, UDS beats the defending champions UCC with 9 points gap and emerging the winners of the Tertiary Business Sense Challenge 2nd edition (2020).



THE JOURNEY OF UCC AND UDS

The UCC journey

The defending champions, UCC made their maiden appearance in the contest at the final stage two contest for the quarter finals competing against the KTU. UCC managed to book their slot to the quarter finals with 66 points while KTU managed to score 25 points.

After securing their place in the quarter finals, they had the chance to meet the UDS and went ahead to beat them to progress to the semi-finals. At the end of the contest, UCC scored 72.33 points while UDS pulled 59 points.

The first semi-final contest of the day was between the KNUST, and the UCC. In what turned out to be a heated clash, the KNUST could not realise its dream of making it to the final stage as it scored 55.5 points while UCC won the day with 66 points.

After booking their semi-final place, the UCC lived up to its reputation as the defending champions and managed to secure their place in the finals after beating the KNUST. Although it was not an easy contest, the UCC managed to beat the KNUST with 66 points and progressed to the finals of the TBSC.

The UDS journey

The students from the Upper West Region came into the competition with a dream to secure their position at the finals.

The journey, however, was not an easy one as they had to struggle their way through to make it to the finals of the contest.

The UDS was able to beat the GTUC in the stage two contest with 54 points to secure their place in the quarter finals. GTUC exited the TBSC at this stage with 33 points.

After losing during the quarter final contest against the UCC, the school had the opportunity to come back into the semi-finals after becoming the losing school with the highest score.

At the semi-finals, the UDS put up a spirited performance against the UEW and managed to beat them to secure their slot at the finals. At the end of the contest, UDS won by accruing 65 points while UEW ended the contest with 53 points booking their place to face the UCC at the finals.

The aim of the contest

The TBSC is an initiative of the Graphic Business aimed at developing the cognitive growth of business students to build successful business careers in the future.

It is being held on the theme: “Developing Business Minds – The Hot Seat.”

The maiden edition, held last year, brought together students from tertiary business schools to test their knowledge in various aspects of business courses.

The University of Cape Coast emerged winner of the maiden edition.

The Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Chartered Institute of Marketing Ghana (CIMG) are providing the technical support for the contest.

Cedi appreciates 6.4% against dollar. The Ghana cedi has maintained its dominance against its major trading partners, especially the US dollar, as market updates from the First National Bank show there has been a more than 6 percent appreciation of the local currency since beginning of the year. From the report, since January 2020 the cedi has appreciated by 6.4 percent against the US dollar – a feat that has never been achieved in recent years. For example, at beginning of this year (January), the cedi was trading averagely at GH¢5.534 to US$1. However, as of Thursday February 20, 2020, it traded averagely at GH¢5.282 to US$1.
