WACWISA MASTERS AND PhD SCHOLARSHIPS

Background

The West African Centre for Water, Irrigation and Sustainable Agriculture (WACWISA) at the University for Development Studies, Ghana is accepting applications for Master’s and PhD programmes under the World Bank African Centre’s of Excellence Impact (ACE Impact) Project for aspiring African Engineers to work in an environment that supports high caliber research, promotes the development of engineering skills, leadership qualities, and networking with experienced engineers across the world.

WACWISA supports a wide range of research activities and, in conjunction with its international partners, provides a rigorous Master’s and PhD training programmes in the field of Irrigation and Drainage Engineering.

The Scholarship Award Scheme (SAS) is provided by the Government of Ghana (GoG) and the World Bank (WB) to support promising African students to pursue Masters (MSc/MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) study programmes in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering and to conduct  related research in the West African sub-region in particular and the Africa Region at large. Enrolled students will be supported to develop international experience in one or more of the WACWISA’s international partners’ laboratories and field stations. The need for highly skilled trained professionals is very paramount, given the issues of water scarcity and the development of functional and efficient irrigation infrastructure at the Africa regional level, needed for the intensification of agriculture, increased productivity and food security.

General Eligibility

Applicants should:

• Meet the standard University for Development Studies Admission requirement for both local and international students.
• Apply for the Masters/Doctor of Philosophy programme in Irrigation and Drainage Engineering at the University for Development Studies.
• Submit an official/certified academic transcript from the previous University of study and a certified copy of academic certificates, with official English translation provided where necessary
• For the Masters programme, have a Bachelor’s degree (honours) or equivalent with at least a Second-Class Upper Division in Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Soil and Water Conservation and Management, Horticulture, Agronomy, Hydrology and Watershed Management and Engineering, Agricultural Technology, Soil Science or related fields. Second Class Lower Division may also be specially considered for admission of female candidates.
• Have a minimum qualification: Research-based Masters degree programme or equivalent in related field (Agricultural Engineering, Civil Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Soil and Water Conservation and Management, Horticulture, Agronomy, Hydrology and Watershed Management and Engineering, Agricultural Technology, Soil Science) if applying for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
• Practical field training/experience in irrigation and drainage related activities is an advantage.
• Masters applicants must submit a three (3) page and PhD five (5) page maximum research proposal which shall contain a research topic, background, problem statement and justification, objectives, materials and methods and expected results.
• Applicants shall submit a two (2) page statement of motivation outlining their fitness for the study programme and benefit of the training to their home country and Africa in general.
• All applicants to the Masters or PhD programmes must submit two (2) academic letters of reference and one (1) professional letter of reference.
• Provide a detailed curriculum vitae (CV) – maximum two (2) pages
• All applicants shall be interviewed.
• Applicants must be less than 35 years for the Masters programme and less than 40 years for PhD
• Be nationals of and resident in Africa.
• Provide a copy of Identity Card (ID) or Bio-data page of National Passport

Note: Female candidates in the West-Africa sub-region are particularly encouraged to apply.

Language Requirement

The program training language is solely in English. Francophone candidates with proven evidence of competence in English are encouraged to apply.

However, the program will provide ten (10) weeks certificate language competency training (English and French) to selected candidates prior to the start of the academic year.

Details of the Scholarship Package

The selection of beneficiaries of the Scholarship Award Scheme (SAS) shall be subject to the maintenance of a high-grade academic performance during the coursework, successfully development and defence of research proposal during the first 6 to 12 months of the programme and high-level performance of progress of students.

The scholarship is tenable at the University for Development Studies, School of Engineering and shall cover the following:

• Full Tuition, research and learning costs

The scholarship will cover the official University fees for Masters Students (24 months) and PhD students (36 months) at the University for Development Studies, School of Engineering. This will include: tuition, registration, examination, matriculation, Student Identity Card, ICT and library. These will be payable to the University for Development Studies.

• Monthly Stipend

The scholarship includes a monthly stipend to cover accommodation, living expenses, health insurance and other personal incidentals.

• Research Costs

This research cost will cover transport, field data collection, software, and other student project related costs.

• Travel Costs

The scholarship will cover the cost of a return economy class ticket between the candidate’s

home country and Ghana for international students.

• International Placement Costs

Students shall be supported and placed in international laboratories of partner institutions for the conduct of research where need be and to expose them to the international setting to allow them gain international experience. This cover travel cost in a return economy class ticket and living expenses for a period of between three (3) to six (6) months.

Program Duration

The program duration is two (2) years (24 months) years for Masters (MSc/MPhil) and 3 years (36 months) for PhD programmes.

The MSc. programme comprises 10 modules including (9 taught courses, dissertation and one module of field attachment). All the modules are compulsory and there is an examination at the end of each module. Field visits are also part of most of the taught modules.

A student may take all the modules continuously or break the modules to his/her convenience. He/she will then have to take the modules with another year group or when a re-take is being organized. When a student completes all the modules and has spent 4 months working on a dissertation of 20,000 words, he/she is awarded an MSc. The MPhil programme comprises 12 modules including field placement and graduate seminars and the student would spend 9 months working on a thesis of 37,500 words. An MSc. would last one year and MPhil two years when taken continuously.

The maximum duration allowable for students taking the modules intermittently either for M.Sc. or MPhil is three years.  Where a student is unable to finish his/her studies by the end of the stipulated period, the student will have to apply for extension and register with the new fees.

The MSc/MPhil. PHN programme aims to produce a cadre of practitioners and health professionals for teaching and research in academic institutions and for positions of professional leadership in health and health-related agencies where research is an important function. The MSc/MPhil. PHN graduates will be equipped to advocate better health through diet and nutrition, promote health and reduce the risk of diet-related diseases through educational and environmental approaches to improve nutrition and physical activity.

The MSc. programme covers 16 months duration whilst the MPhil. takes two (2) academic years to complete.

• Chemical Pathology

Admission/Entry Requirement

To be admitted into MPhil. Chemical Pathology, a candidate must:

1. Have obtained a good first degree in the Biomedical Sciences or related areas from a recognized university
2. Submit an official transcript of academic records
3. Submit three referee’s reports, two of which must be from somebody who is familiar with the applicant’s academic work.
4. Submit a 3-5 page research proposal of his/her intended research area.
5. Pass an interview
6. Demonstrate evidence of financial capability
7. Satisfy any additional requirements prescribed by the Graduate School

• PhD Chemical Pathology

Admission/Entry Requirement

A candidate seeking admission into PhD Chemical Pathology must:

1. Have an MPhil/MSc. degree in Chemical Pathology, Biomedical Sciences or related areas from an accredited university
2. Submit an official transcript of academic records
3. Submit three referee’s reports, two of which must be from someone who is familiar with the applicant’s academic work.
4. Submit a 3-5 page research proposal of his/her intended research area.

17. School of Medicine and Health Sciences

• Master of Public Health
• Community Disaster Resilience Studies (MSc CDRS)

The Community Disaster Resilience Studies Programme emerged from collaborative work under the strengthening leadership in disaster resilience programme which set out to strengthen linkages between practitioners and future leaders as well as institutionalize disaster resilience leadership. The SMHS has thus built faculty capacity in disaster risk management and resilience leadership by networking with different world-renowned institutions in Africa and around the globe as part of efforts to sustain global disaster resilience leadership through collective learning and resource sharing. The goal of the Programme in Community Disaster Resilience Studies is to train frontline community disaster prevention, response and recovery leaders who will be equipped with interdisciplinary analytical skills, knowledge, techniques and attitudes to provide comprehensive world-class disaster risk reduction leadership. The MSc CDRS curriculum has a community and interdisciplinary focus, consistent with the UDS statutory mandate.

Requirements for Admission

Selection of applicants is made on a competitive basis; however, candidates with institutional support have a strong advantage. Functionaries in Disaster Risk Management Centres; International Humanitarian Organizations; Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs) and Community-Based Organisations (CBOs); Local Government Operatives; Development Planners; Environmental/Natural Resource Managers; Social/Community Development Workers;  Public Health Professionals; Economists; Geographers; Meteorologists; and Disaster Information Technology Workers etc are all encouraged to apply.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

General entry requirements

All applicants to our full-time and sandwich graduate programmes are required to pass a selection interview to be conducted by the relevant Department of the University.

Applicants applying for research related programmes (MSc. by research/MPhil./MPH/PhD) should include a short research proposal.

The minimum requirements for admission are:

For PGD/MA/MSc./MPhil. programmes:

• Applicants must possess a good Bachelor’s degree in a related field from an accredited University or Tertiary Institution.

• Applicants with at least a Second Class (Lower Division) are eligible to apply. Candidates with Third Class or Pass are strongly advised not to apply.

For PhD programmes:

• An MPhil./MSc. degree by research from an accredited University or Tertiary Institution.

MODE OF APPLICATION

All Ghanaian and foreign applicants for the 2020/2021 academic year admissions are required to use the UDS online application portal. The procedure for the online application process is as follows:

1. Make a payment of GHS 200.00 (Two Hundred Ghana Cedis) in the case of Ghanaian applicants, and USD 150.00 (One Hundred and fifty United States Dollars), for foreign applicants, for the UDS E-Voucher at any Zenith Bank, Agricultural Development Bank (ADB), Prudential Bank, National Investment Bank (NIB), GCB Bank Ltd., Ecobank and Stanbic Bank branches throughout the country.
2. The E-Voucher contains the PIN and Serial Number required for the completion of the online form.
3. Access the online form by visiting our online admissions portal at http://admissions.uds.edu.gh soon after payment.
4. In completing the online form, applicants will be required to upload their passport size photographs and certificates. Applicants using objects instead of their own photographs would be disqualified.
5. A completed form will not be considered for admission unless it is SUBMITTED online after accepting the University’s data confirmation policy.
6. Applicants are advised to check thoroughly all details entered before finally submitting their online applications. A form, once submitted, can be viewed, but cannot be edited.
7. Applicants must print out three copies of the application summary; attach three (3) passport-size photographs, transcripts of academic record, certificates and all other relevant documents to each form. Three reference letters are also required (at least, two of the referees should be familiar with applicants’ academic work).
8. Candidates are strongly advised to visit any EMS Office in the Country for assistance towards the return of the application documents (see vii). Applicants are advised not to post the forms themselves. They should seek the advice and services of Ghana Post EMS.
